Allow me to explain the purpose of Project Whammy Douglas.
For starters, this project is not any attempt to belittle or poke fun at the career of Charles "Whammy" Douglas. While his time at the major league level lasted only 11 appearances, that is 11 more than I ever had. It's obvious he had the talent for professional ball, and I respect Mr. Douglas for that.
Now, I grabbed my first Whammy (1959 Topps) while at a card show in May of 2012. It was a cheap vintage pickup for a quarter, if I recall. Who can pass up a '59 Topps for a quarter with the amazing name of Whammy Douglas? I looked up the career of Whammy when I got home. There is not much to mention in the short Wikipedia listing, but still a great story. It went into my vintage binder, but I never did much with it. I would think of the card from time to time, mainly because of the cool name of Whammy.
Fast forward to early 2014. At my local card shop's monthly raffle and contest, one of my friends pulled a Whammy Douglas buy back card from a pack of 2014 Topps series 1. I commented about how nice the card was, and how I picked up the unstamped release a year and a half prior. Being the cool guy he is, Tom just gave me the card. Well, getting home that night, I looked again for Whammy and realized he had a card released in 1958. And that's all. No more cards for Whammy.
I had to complete the set. And here they are. I scanned the buy back so you can see the 75th anniversary stamp from Topps. I hope a 1958 buy back shows up so I can add it to my collection.
